Turkish Airlines set a Guinness World Record for flying to more countries than any other airline. The Star Alliance carrier offers service to 120 countries with many connecting to and from its hub at Istanbul Airport (IST).
The record was set on October 21st when it added flights to Santiago Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL) in Chile. The record was set based on its current route network. If discontinued routes were added, the total count would be 131 countries. Turkish Airlines’ record-setting 120 countries is around 30 more than any competitors.
Turkish Airlines CEO, Bilal Ekşi, said:
We are delighted to be in Santiago, Chile, our newest route launched today, and to receive the Guinness World Records title for the Most Countries Flown to by an Airline. As the only airline to hold this distinction for over a decade, we proudly showcase the strength of our flight network and reinforce our mission to connect people, cultures, and destinations around the globe.”
Turkish Airlines has had the most extensive route network since 2012. This includes 13 cities in the United States, including:
- Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
- Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)
- Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)
- Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
- Denver International Airport (DEN)
- Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
- Miami International Airport (MIA)
- Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
- New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
- San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
- Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)
- Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)
Denver International Airport (DEN) was the latest city added this past June.
Anthony’s Take: Turkish Airlines earning this award is no surprise. The airline has long flown to more countries than anyone else. As a point of reference, United Airlines flies to 73 countries as of this month.
