The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is preparing to screen more than 17 million people during what it expects to be the busiest Labor Day on record. The chaotic travel period is expected to run between August 29th and September 4th. August 30th is projected to be the busiest day and the TSA expects more than 2.86 million people to pass through security checkpoints.
Labor Day will be the latest in a series of “busiest” times for the TSA. The record was last set on July 7th when it screened more than three million passengers across the United States. Air travel volumes this summer are the highest the agency has ever seen in its history. Passenger volume is expected to be 8.5% higher than last year at the same time. The TSA has already screened 239.8 million people since Memorial Day weekend, which averages to 2.7 million people per day. The top 10 busiest days in the agency’s history have all occurred since May 2024.

TSA Administrator David Pekoske, said:
People are traveling more than ever this summer and TSA along with our airline and airport partners stand ready to close the busiest summer travel period on record during this upcoming Labor Day weekend. I commend our vigilant workforce, from our TSOs on the front lines at airport security checkpoints across the country to those behind the scenes, working hard to keep the transportation system secure—especially as we continue to roll out new checkpoint technology that improves security effectiveness, efficiency, and the passenger experience.”
The TSA is prepared to meet its wait time standards (10 minutes and under in TSA PreCheck® lanes and 30 minutes and under in standard screening lanes) for this upcoming holiday. The agency recommends airline passengers enroll in TSA PreCheck®. With it, members do not need to remove shoes, belts, 3-1-1 liquids, laptops, food items, and light jackets at checkpoints.
Anthony’s Take: Get ready for another busy travel week. Arrive early, be patient, and have a good trip.
