The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced today that a brand-new East Security Checkpoint at Denver International Airport (DEN) is now open. Located on Level 6, the new checkpoint is part of the airport’s $2.1 billion Great Hall Program, which is aimed at improving security, increasing capacity, and enhancing the passenger experience.
The East Checkpoint features 17 automated screening lanes and is a mirror image of the West Checkpoint, which opened in 2024. The checkpoint is equipped with state-of-the-art screening technology (making it one of the most advanced security screening areas in the country). Key Features of the new East Security Checkpoint include:
- Credential Authentication Technology (CAT-2): 34 units match a real-time photo of the traveler with their ID.
- Automated Screening Lanes (ASLs): All 17 lanes include large bins with automated conveyor belts and RFID tracking.
- Computed Tomography (CT) X-ray Machines: These produce 3D images, which allow passengers to keep electronics and liquids in their bags.
- eAIT Body Scanners: Nine open-design scanners use millimeter wave tech. This reduces the need for rescans and accommodating travelers with metal implants.
- Bottle Liquid Scanners: Designed to safely scan medically necessary liquids over the 3.4-ounce limit using laser tech.
- Explosive Trace Detection (ETD): Detects explosive residue from hands or belongings using quick swab tests.
The checkpoint has three entrances and digital signage will direct passengers based on their screening eligibility (i.e., TSA PreCheck®, CLEAR, and standard screening). Real-time travel advisories and updates will also be displayed here.
In 2024, the TSA at Denver International Airport (DEN) screened 24.6 million travelers. This made it the 11th busiest TSA checkpoint in the United States. The opening of the East Security Checkpoint marks a major milestone and the next is set for late summer 2026 when eight additional security lanes on the north end of Level 5 are scheduled to open.
Anthony’s Take: Denver International Airport (DEN) has been jam-packed the last few times that I have been at the airport. Hopefully, this new checkpoint will help to ease congestion and make the journey better for travelers here.
