Rick Steves is a big part of why I love Europe so much and what has driven me to want to keep exploring. For years, I watched Rick Steves’ TV shows, read his books, perused his forums, and found him a great source for learning about the history and culture of various countries in Europe. The travel guru just shared via social media that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Rick Steves message takes the same tone that the man always has in public: upbeat. He says:

I’d like to take a moment to share some important news. I have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. My doctor assures me that, if you’re going to get cancer, this is a good kind to get, and careful scans show no sign of it having spread.”

Thankfully, he feels that he has a clear path to recovery and will undergo prostate surgery. My best friend’s husband is currently undergoing treatment for prostate cancer and has been making good progress with radiation.

In May, I wrote about Rick Steves and how he only flies Economy Class and thinks planes should only offer one class. No thanks, Rick. I love my lie-flat seats.

Anthony’s Take: Although Rick Steves and I prefer to travel in vastly different ways, he has been a travel inspiration and I wish him a speedy recovery.

I’m a big fan of Rick Steve’s I’ve enjoyed his podcasts, tv shows, and guidebooks. If you want some fun go over to his follower groups on facebook or Reddit. Talk about blind loyalty 🙂 It’s like an NPR and PBS convention rolled into one.

Hey Rick.
I was diagnosed early with the same just under 2 years ago.
It’s ok..its a guy thing and my oncologist and research I read said 1 in 9 guys will get it.

I caught it early enough…and of all the options offered in Houston…I don’t regret selecting HD Brachytherapy. 2 simple and less invasive procedures a couple of years ago. Now my psa is down steady at 0.5 and more recently 0.2. In 6 weeks…I’m confident to Ring the Bell.

Get info on this very precise radiation procedure that promises not to interfere at all with adjacent organ functions..like some other radiation procedures, and definitely les problematic than removal by surgery.

Call me on 832-331-1615 if I can point you in a right direction.

Good luck. I’ve been where yiu are now.

Love your shows and commentaries/ books etc
