A major Mexican resort destination and its nearby international airport were plunged into chaos today after Mexican military forces reportedly killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

The operation was carried out in the town of Tapalpa in the state of Jalisco and it sparked an immediate and violent backlash from cartel members. Following reports of Oseguera Cervantes’ death, gunmen launched coordinated attacks across several states, including Jalisco, Michoacán, Tamaulipas, Colima, Guanajuato, Aguascalientes, and Veracruz.

In Puerto Vallarta, a popular Pacific coast vacation hub, tourists were urged to remain indoors as cartel members set vehicles ablaze, erected barricades, and engaged in gun battles with security forces in the streets. Large plumes of smoke were seen rising across the city as burning cars and makeshift roadblocks blocked major thoroughfares. Hotels reportedly advised guests to shelter in place while the violence unfolded outside.

The US Embassy in Mexico issued an urgent security alert urging American citizens in Jalisco to remain indoors until further notice due to the rapidly deteriorating security situation. The US State Department echoed the warning, advising travelers to monitor official updates closely. Violence was also reported at Guadalajara International Airport (GDL), where gunfire allegedly erupted amid the unrest. Social media videos showed travelers and airport staff fleeing terminals as panic spread both inside and outside the facility.

Local outlets reported that cartel members targeted security checkpoints and critical infrastructure as part of the coordinated response to their leader’s killing.

In response to the instability, several international airlines reportedly canceled or diverted flights scheduled to operate into Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) and Guadalajara International Airport (GDL).

Oseguera Cervantes, 53, rose to prominence after the arrest and conviction of Joaquín Guzmán, known as El Chapo, becoming one of Mexico’s most feared and influential cartel figures. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel is widely considered one of the most violent and powerful criminal organizations operating in the country. Authorities have not yet provided detailed confirmation of the military operation that led to his reported death, but the scale and coordination of the retaliatory attacks underscore the cartel’s continued reach and capacity for disruption.

Anthony’s Take: As security forces attempt to regain control, residents and visitors in affected areas remain on high alert with ongoing reports of roadblocks, gunfire, and burning vehicles across multiple cities.
