Snakes on a plane? Sure, everyone has heard of that. But, how about eels spilling out of an aircraft’s cargo hold? The slithering creatures were captured on a video posted to X yesterday at Vancouver International Airport (YVR).
This apparently occurred at YVR airport today. @GlobalBC pic.twitter.com/PSJvRH8uuE

Lucky at One Mile at a Time first shared the post above and questioned whether they were snakes or eels. It looks like they are eels based on the way they are moving and how their bodies are positioned. One has to wonder what the purpose of the cargo was here. I’d assume they were destined to become a sushi lunch, but they could also have been headed to an aquarium or pet store.
Officers at @iflymia detected this bag of snakes hidden in a passenger’s pants at a checkpoint on Fri, April 26. @TSA called our @CBPSoutheast and Miami-Dade Police partners in to assist, and the snakes were turned over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. pic.twitter.com/CggJob8IT8

This is far from the first time that some creatures have gotten loose in an airport or been found by TSA agents. Back in May, I wrote about a man trying to smuggle snakes in his pants (more here).
An AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur to Tawau was forced to change course after a snake was seen on board.
To avert any untoward incidents involving passengers and crew, the flight was diverted to Kuching.
Here, the reptile is seen moving very slowly behind a translucent panel. pic.twitter.com/dAhCFAlppE

In 2022, a snake was seen onboard an AirAsia flight that was forced to divert.
Anthony’s Take: I’m not a vegetarian, but I do have a huge heart for animals (often they get more compassion from me than people). All of these creatures did not deserve to be shipped and accidentally dumped, smuggled, or trapped in an aircraft. Even if the eels were meant to be food, they should not be made to suffer in the sun on the airport’s apron.
