Austin’s iconic South Congress district is getting a hospitality upgrade as The Standard brand prepares to open its first Texas property in Spring 2027. The project will transform the existing South Congress Hotel into a redesigned lifestyle destination and marking The Standard’s first new US opening in more than a decade.
The new property will be located at 1603 South Congress Avenue (placing it in one of Austin’s most vibrant and culturally rich neighborhoods)
The Standard is known for its design-forward hotels and social atmosphere. It has expanded its global footprint with locations already spanning cities such as London, Ibiza, Bangkok, and Brussels. Upcoming openings in Lisbon and Mexico City further underscore the brand’s international growth. Bringing the concept to Austin signals a strategic move into one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic hospitality markets in the United States.
Rather than building from the ground up, the project will involve a full conversion and renovation of the existing South Congress Hotel to blend the site’s established identity with The Standard’s signature aesthetic. The hotel is envisioned as more than just a place to stay. It will function as a dynamic social hub that combines hospitality, wellness, dining, and entertainment into a cohesive experience. Plans include a rooftop pool overlooking South Congress, multiple restaurants and bars, and social wellness offerings designed to appeal to both locals and visitors.
The redevelopment is being led by a team with deep ties to Austin’s creative and hospitality scenes, alongside global expertise from Hyatt’s Lifestyle Group. The project’s architecture and interiors will reflect a balance between international design sensibilities and local craftsmanship to ensure the property remains rooted in Austin’s unique cultural identity. The involvement of Hyatt’s Bunkhouse team, which has a strong presence in the Austin market, is expected to help maintain continuity with the neighborhood’s character.
The Standard, Austin is being positioned as an all-day, all-night destination, where guests can move seamlessly between cafés, gathering spaces, guest rooms, and outdoor areas. The concept emphasizes energy and interaction with spaces designed to foster music, conversation, and community (all anchored by a carefully curated food and beverage program).
The South Congress Hotel is scheduled to close for renovations in Summer 2026 with the transformed property expected to reopen as The Standard, Austin in Spring 2027. As additional details emerge, the project is likely to generate significant interest, both as a major brand debut in Texas and as a reinvention of one of Austin’s well-known hospitality destinations. Once open, the property will participate in the World of Hyatt® loyalty program and provide the same benefits received at other hotels under this brand flag.
Anthony’s Take: I love that Hyatt is building out this brand further. The development also reflects a broader trend in the industry, where lifestyle-focused hotels are increasingly blending local culture, design, and social experiences to create destinations that extend well beyond traditional accommodations.
