Last year, I had never even heard of Arajet, but I first wrote about the low-cost airline and the flag carrier of the Dominican Republic in December. Its operations began in September 2022 with a flight to Colombia’s Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport (BAO). The carrier began flying to the United States this year with Miami International Airport (MIA), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), and San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) as current destinations. Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) will see 4x weekly flights beginning on November 20th and to/from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) 3x weekly starting on November 15th (I plan to be on the inaugural). A sixth US route was unveiled as Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB). Now, Arajet is looking to massively expand with seven new US cities and five additional routes added to existing airports. It’s waiting on government approval, but all signs point to at least some of these routes becoming reality.
Arajet wants to add six new US cities with service to/from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ):
- Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
- Denver International Airport (DEN)
- Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)
- Los Angeles Intercontinental Airport (LAX)
- Philadelphia Intercontinental Airport (PHL)
- Providence’s Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport (PVD)
It would also like to add service between Santo Domingo’s Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO). In addition to the seven new cities, Arajet wants to add flights between the following cities:
- Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to/from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ)
- Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to/from Santo Domingo’s Las Américas International Airport (SDQ)
- Miami International Airport (MIA) to/from Cibao International Airport (STI)
- Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to/from Cibao International Airport (STI)
- Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) to/from Santo Domingo’s Las Américas International Airport (SDQ)
The airline uses Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft that have the capacity to reach any city on the East Coast and some in the Midwest. Arajet is growing so quickly and the route announcements are coming fast and furious. Arajet will also offer passengers easy connections across the Caribbean and Latin America. It serves more than 25 destinations across 17 countries including Aruba, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and others.
Anthony’s Take: Arajet has piqued my curiosity and I’m looking forward to flying them between Chicago and Punta Cana this fall.
