As I mentioned last week, I have been flying United a lot lately (eight flights last week and four this week) and with that I have gotten to taste lots of its latest meal offerings. These have largely been good and a marked improvement over what United has been serving on its flights. United recently added “Signature Dishes” from its hubs. These are available only through preorders and are meant to evoke the location that you’re traveling to or from (although some of this logic is a little suspect). I’ve recently reviewed the selections from Washington DC (here), Houston (here), and Chicago (here). Last night, I got to try United’s signature dish for Los Angeles:
The Signature Dish for Los Angeles is Seared Salmon. This is served with steamed jasmine rice, wilted lacinato kale, and Veracruz sauce. The picture on the menu looked great.
The Seared Salmon that I was served was a bit flavorless. The sauce was served on the side and even mixing it in did not add much to the taste. The tray came with a nice green salad, a brown roll, and Magnolia Bakery’s Banana Pudding. This meal is also much better than what United has been serving, but I would not order it again. I’m also not sure of the salmon’s connection to Los Angeles. I would think a Mexican or Thai dish or even the Cobb salad is more LA.
I had this on a United flight earlier this week. It’s just as good as what you can get in any of Magnolia’s retail locations. This dessert has just been introduced and like I said in my last review, it’s the best thing United has served ever.
Anthony’s Take: This one is a miss for me. The salmon, while cooked fine, was blah and flavorless. The rice also had zero taste and I do not like kale.
