United added “Signature Dishes” from its hubs in 2024. I have tasted most of them and I’m thankful that they are once again rotating in new choices. I’ve shared my reviews of other meals including Los Angeles (here and here), Washington DC (here), Houston (here), Newark (here and here), Denver (here) and Chicago (here and here). Today, while flying from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) I had the opportunity to taste the latest Chicago Signature Dish.
The Chicago Signature Dish – Greek Pastitsio is only available if preordered before a flight. It’s described as having a “braised beef ragu, bechamel veloute, and spiced tomato reduction.”
The dish was delicious and I will definitely be ordering this again. A side of grated cheese was served with the main dish. I did not think it needed it (and did not use it). I loved the flavors and could taste the nutmeg that added warmth to the bechamel. The pastitsio was served with a nice salad and Magnolia Bakery’s Chocolatey Hazel Nut Swirl pudding. Bread was brought around from a basket with two choices offered.
United is currently serving Magnolia Bakery’s Chocolatey Hazelnut Swirl Pudding and it’s awful. I took one bite and was done. Magnolia Bakery’s Red Velvet Pudding is too sweet and nowhere nearly as good as the original, but edible. This one was just yuck. I hope United switches back to the original and stops with these artificial flavors.
Anthony’s Take: This is now one of my favorite meals on United and that includes in Polaris®. The flavors were great and I’d gladly eat this again (just without the dessert). United gets props for much improved catering this year.
