I had a quick overnight trip that had me flying to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) this week. The flight from Tampa International Airport (TPA) gave me the opportunity to taste one of American’s current First Class offerings. It’s a lot for lunch, but the hearty Short Rib with Steakhouse Sauce is a good choice if you’re hungry.

The Short Rib with Steakhouse Sauce was supposed to be served with a “twice baked potato and grilled onion.” This was not what I received.

To start, I ordered a ginger ale. It was served with a large portion of warm nuts. American offers far more than United. Don’t get me started on Delta. I want warm nuts and not a Biscoff before my meal.

The tray came with the same odd sausage appetizer and the same slice of cheesecake that I had last week. The appetizer might have been bratwurst and was served with a pesto sauce. I did not eat either of these items. What was supposed to be a twice baked potato was actually a rather bland macaroni and cheese. It was fine, but nothing exciting. The meat was cooked nicely, but the portion size was so small that it hid under the grilled onion.

Delta’s Braised Beef Short Rib (pictured above) was much better (taste test here), but this surpassed the fatty offering from United (taste test here).
Anthony’s Take: American’s catering is hit or miss. This meal was better than not eating, but pretty blah and not something that I would go out of my way to eat again.
