United added “Signature Dishes” from its hubs in 2024. I tasted most of them last year and they have started to rotate with some new choices. I’ve shared my reviews of other meals including Los Angeles (here), Washington DC (here), Houston (here), Newark (here), Denver (here) and Chicago (here and here). Yesterday, while flying from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Tampa International Airport (TPA) on a severely delayed flight, I got to taste the latest Newark Signature Dish: Pastrami Spiced Chicken.

The Newark Signature Dish consists of pastrami spiced chicken with roasted, smashed fingerling potatoes, roasted cabbage, and a mustard demi glace. This is only available when passengers select it in advance.

The tray that I received included a  green salad, a warmed semolina roll, and Magnolia Bakery’s Red Velvet Pudding. This dish was great all around. The potatoes were crispy, but soft in the center. The chicken had a good flavor and the cabbage was the perfect accompaniment. I know it doesn’t look like much with the smashed potatoes, but give it a try if you’re presented with the option.

The tray once again held Magnolia Bakery’s Red Velvet Pudding. I find it too sweet and nowhere near as good as the original. I hope United switches back soon.

Anthony’s Take: I heap criticism and praise where it is due. United gets points for this meal as it was one of the better ones I have had recently and way better than past dishes. Please keep improving, United.
