Sun Country Airlines is expanding its footprint with plans to open a new operational base at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) in early 2026. The move supports the airline’s growing cargo operations and aligns with its long-term strategy to also broaden its scheduled passenger service network.

Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) was selected due to its role as a major Amazon Air hub and sorting facility, as well as its status as one of the fastest-growing cargo airports in the United States. The surrounding region also demonstrates strong passenger demand and positions Sun Country for future expansion in scheduled service as the airline continues to diversify and scale its offerings.

The new base will function as a central location where Sun Country’s cargo aircraft are stationed and where local flight crews begin and end their assignments. Sun Country will continue to utilize shared airport facilities and plans to officially open the base on January 31st. In preparation for the expansion, the airline is actively hiring pilots in the area.

Beyond Cincinnati, Sun Country is evaluating additional base locations to support the continued growth of both its Amazon cargo operations and its passenger service network. The airline’s hybrid model blends scheduled passenger service, charter operations, and cargo flying. This allows it to deploy aircraft and resources dynamically and efficiently.

With its hub at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), Sun Country focuses on serving leisure travelers and charter customers, while operating cargo services for Amazon across a wide domestic and international footprint. Its network includes destinations throughout the United States, Mexico, Central America, Canada, and the Caribbean.

Jude Bricker, President and Chief Executive Officer at Sun Country, said:

Growing our footprint beyond Minneapolis-St. Paul has long been a goal for Sun Country, and we are excited to mark this major milestone. Amazon and our cargo operation is a critical segment of our differentiated business model and enables our scheduled service seasonal flexibility and growth. We are pleased to open this base, which will support our service and efficiency across our operation. Moreover, this offers new opportunities for advancement for our pilots.”

Anthony’s Take: The establishment of this base marks a significant step in Sun Country’s growth while enhancing its cargo capabilities and strengthening the foundation for future passenger service.
