An “unauthorized” helicopter crashed into the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Cairns this morning. Authorities are unsure how the unidentified pilot was able to takeoff from Cairns Airport (CNS) and if he had a license. He was killed at the scene and two hotel guests are being treated for smoke inhalation after the fiery crash.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from the hotel as fire filled the roof of the building around 2:00 AM. The helicopter’s rotors broke off with one landing in the pool and another hitting a tree about 262 feet from the crash. The Associated Press reports that Cairns Airport CEO, Richard Barker, said initial findings showed “no compromise of the airport security program or processes.”

It’s amazing that no one else was injured or killed. The two guests, a man in his 80s and a woman in her 70s, were treated for smoke inhalation and released already. The helicopter was owned by North Queensland-based charter company, Nautilus Aviation. It runs scenic tours along the Cairns waterfront and is supporting investigation efforts.
Anthony’s Take: Can you imagine waking up to a helicopter crashing into your hotel? Thankfully, guests were okay. It will be interesting to see how the pilot gained access and why he struck the hotel.
