Spirit Airlines is phasing out the blocked middle seats in what it calls Premium Economy and is launching new extra-legroom Premium Seats beginning tomorrow, July 9th. The move marks a major milestone in Spirit’s ongoing commitment to upgrading the guest experience. The Spirit maintenance team is installing seats with lightning speed.

Premium Economy Guests will enjoy four additional inches of legroom on the majority of Spirit’s fleet for a more comfortable flight. The updated configuration is already in place on more than 115 aircraft. Spirit employees worked around the clock to reconfigure 115 aircraft in just over three weeks. The new configuration will see 42 Premium Seats per aircraft. This amounts to 4,830 extra-legroom seats added fleetwide so far.

Blocked middle seats are now a thing of the past and Spirit’s Premium Economy is evolving into a more flexible, comfortable, and accessible travel option for passengers who want more space and convenience. This update reflects a broader strategy at Spirit to enhance its onboard product, streamline the fleet, and respond to customer feedback. The airline has done a good job in pivoting as demand for more premium travel has arisen.

To commemorate the launch of the extra-legroom seating, Spirit is offering a limited-time promotion through its Free Spirit® loyalty program. Members can 1,500 bonus points on roundtrip Premium Economy flights or 750 bonus points on one-way Premium Economy flights Eligible bookings must be made between July 9th and August 8th for travel through December 31st.

Rana Ghosh, Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Spirit Airlines, said:

We’re adding extra-legroom Premium Seats to give more travelers the opportunity to enjoy a premium experience with extra space at a great value. Thank you to our Team Members who quickly and safely rolled out this major upgrade to our onboard and Guest experience.”

Anthony’s Take: You’ll still find me in the Big Front Seats™ (now known as First Class on Spirit), but it’s great to see the evolution with more premium choices here.
