Back in May, I wrote about Spirit Airlines and Contour Airlines entering into a partnership where Spirit would begin to offer flights to leisure destinations from several of Contour’s EAS markets. Now, the first route has been announced: Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to/from Macon’s Middle Georgia Regional Airport (MCN).
Contour is the second largest carrier in the US Department of Transportation’s Essential Air Service (EAS) program. It currently serves 22 EAS cities throughout the country. It provides service to the major connecting hubs of its interline partners: American, United, and Alaska Airlines. The new flight will be offered 2x weekly beginning on October 16th.
Macon’s Middle Georgia Regional Airport (MCN) is the third airport that Spirit will fly to in Georgia. It launched flights to/from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) in 2006 and will debut at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) on August 14th.
John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning at Spirit Airlines, said:
We look forward to offering travelers in Middle Georgia new non-stop flights and affordable fares to our FLL gateway, expanding their travel options to the Sunshine State and other destinations. We’re grateful to Contour for their partnership and collaboration as we work to create exciting new connections between communities across our networks.”
Ben Munson, President of Contour Airlines, added:
We are excited to partner with Spirit in their introduction of service to Macon. Spirit’s nonstop and low fare service to Florida will perfectly complement our existing flights in Macon and provide new value to travelers.”
Anthony’s Take: The US Department of Transportation’s Essential Air Service (EAS) program offers flights to areas that have little or no service. Airlines benefit from subsidies and passengers can connect with one stop in major hubs. Spirit is smart to take on this route.
