Spirit Airlines is leaning into its most recognizable nickname with the launch of a new series of “banana plane” liveries. These paint jobs transform its signature bright yellow aircraft into flying tributes to its brand identity and loyal customers. The airline unveiled six special-edition designs today that reimagine its aircraft as oversized bananas complete with humorous, sticker-style graphics.

The first aircraft featuring the new livery is set to enter service this week. Its design mimics the familiar sticker found on bananas, complete with playful messaging such as references to Florida origins, savings-focused travel, and tongue-in-cheek nutritional humor. Five additional aircraft will receive similar treatments later this month (each featuring variations of the banana-inspired theme and unique taglines).

Spirit’s bright yellow jets have long earned the unofficial nickname “banana planes” among travelers and aviation enthusiasts. The new liveries embrace that identity in a bold and lighthearted way and turn what was once a nickname into a full-fledged branding campaign. The initiative also highlights the airline’s connection to its fan base by celebrating customers who have helped popularize the nickname over the years.

The banana-themed aircraft are expected to be seen across Spirit’s network, which spans more than 60 destinations throughout the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Rana Ghosh, Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Spirit Airlines, said:

Our special-edition banana liveries celebrate the Spirit super fans who inspire our team to deliver exceptional service that stands out as much as our bright yellow aircraft. Spirit has always differentiated itself through its iconic yellow fleet, industry-disrupting fares and exceptional value, and we’re thankful to our partners at Airbus for their support in helping us bring this celebration to life.”

Anthony’s Take: I love custom liveries. These banana liveries are designed to bring a sense of fun and personality to a flight. I hope to see one in the wild soon.
