Last week, I wrote about Spirit Airlines adding three new routes and cutting five. Now, it has further updated the schedule and chopped another dozen to bring the total number of cuts to 17.
The routes being cut are all over the map with both short flights and some longer haul getting the axe. Here are the 17 routes being dropped this summer and fall:
- Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to/from Miami International Airport (MIA) (ends in September)
- Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to/from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) (ends in September)
- Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to/from Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) (ends in September)
- Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) to/from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) (ends in October)
- Cancún International Airport (CUN) to/from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) (ends in August)
- Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to/from Pensacola International Airport (PNS) (ends in September)
- Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to/from Comayagua International Airport (XPL) (ends in August)
- Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to/from Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport (GUA) (ends in August)
- Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to/from San Pedro Sulas’ Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (SAP) (ends in August)
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to/from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) (ends in September)
- Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) to/from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) (ends in October)
- Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) to/from Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) (ends in October)
- Nashville International Airport (BNA) to/from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) (ends in September)
- Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to/from San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK) (ends in September)
- Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to/from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) (ends in September)
- San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) to/from Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) (ends in September)
- San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) to/from Tampa International Airport (TPA) (ends in September)
Some of these cuts are no doubt from pressure applied from Delta, American, and United as some of these routes touched the hubs of these airlines.
Anthony’s Take: Spirit has grown a lot in the past few years. Like every airline, regular cuts and additions are to be expected as it continues to look for the most profitable routes.
