Spirit Airlines announced five new routes from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) today. The low-cost carrier is going to go head-to-head against Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and JetBlue with flights mostly targeting the others hubs.
Here are the new routes:
- Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) (begins June 7th)
- Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) (begins June 7th)
- Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) (begins July 5th)
- Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) (begins August 9th)
- Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) (begins August 9th)
Charlotte, Dallas, and Phoenix are hubs for American while Houston is a United Airlines stronghold. Los Angeles is a hub for American, Delta, and United (plus, it’s a focus city for JetBlue).
As I wrote about yesterday, Spirit just took delivery of its 200th aircraft and it looks like it’s going to continue to add routes to its network. We’ll see what these flights do to pricing for the routes traditionally dominated by the big three.
Anthony’s Take: Competition is a good thing and Boston has been fiercely contested before by Delta, JetBlue, and American. Spirit will likely bring some price pressure to these carriers and help customers to score lower fares.
