Spirit Airlines exited bankruptcy protection after only four months, brought in a new CEO and other executives, and has been making tons of other changes to make its business more appealing to premium travelers. Today, the low-cost carrier (a designation that it seems to be moving away from) announced a bunch more benefits for its flyers.
Upgrades to the Big Front Seats™ and Comfy Seats
Free Spirit elite members and Free Spirit credit cardholders will enjoy complimentary upgrades to a Big Front Seat™ or a Comfy Seat at boarding, based on availability and status level, with benefits extending to one Guest on the member’s reservation beginning next month.
Expanded Redemptions
One of my biggest gripes with Spirit’s loyalty program is that redemptions could not be used for Big Front Seats™. This is no longer the case and I’m excited as I have a hefty six-figure point balance with Spirit. Passengers can now redeem for all four travel options including Go Big and Go Comfy using Free Spirit points (excluding taxes and fees). Spirit plans to add even more redemptions in the coming months including personalized experiences and elevated perks. There are no further details as to what this includes.
Two Free Checked Bags Benefit for Free Spirit Travel More Mastercard Cardholders
Beginning later in 2025, Spirit and Bank of America will roll-out two free checked bags as a new benefit for Free Spirit Travel More Mastercard Cardholders. An official date has not yet been announced.
Earn on Everyday Purchases with the New Free Spirit Debit Card
Spirit is launching the Free Spirit Debit Card this Fall. It will allow anyone to earn Free Spirit points on their everyday spending and redeem those points for travel on Spirit while receiving Group 2 Priority Boarding and a 25% rebate on inflight purchases.
Go Comfy Reimagined with the Addition of New Extra-Legroom Seating
Go Comfy seats will soon have four additional inches of legroom with a total pitch of 32 inches. The new preferred seating will include seven rows near the front of the aircraft and more than 40 seats on each aircraft. The extra-legroom seating will be installed beginning next month and roll out across the majority of the fleet by July. The remaining installations are expected to be completed in 2026. As part of enhancing Go Comfy, Spirit plans to phase out the blocked middle seat to allow for the introduction of extra-legroom seating. In addition to the extra space, Go Comfy includes a carry-on bag, no change or cancel fees, Priority Boarding, reserved overhead bin space, a snack and non-alcoholic beverage. The extra-legroom seats will be available for booking based on availability starting May 15th (for travel beginning July 9th).
Rana Ghosh, Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Spirit Airlines, said:
Spirit’s new premium options offer travelers exceptional value, and we’re creating even more opportunities for Guests to experience them with our new extra-legroom seating option. We’re also adding more value and perks for our loyalty members at a time when others are taking away benefits, giving our most loyal Guests even more reasons to choose Spirit.”
Anthony’s Take: I love the direction that Spirit is heading and today’s announcement makes flying the airline even more appealing. It’s great to see Spirit pivot and I wish them luck in this journey.
