Southwest Airlines and T-Mobile announced today that they will deliver free, unlimited inflight Wi-Fi to all Southwest Rapid Rewards® members starting on October 24th. The collaboration marks the first time the two brands have teamed up to keep travelers connected from takeoff to landing on a complimentary basis.

With a fleet of more than 800 aircraft, Southwest will become the largest domestic airline to offer free Wi-Fi across every flight by the end of the year. JetBlue currently holds this distinction and it announced today that it will partner with Amazon’s Project Kuiper to upgrade its Wi-Fi to speeds that are even faster than Starlink.

Southwest passengers will need to log in with their Rapid Rewards® account to enjoy free access for the entire duration of their flight regardless of their wireless provider. Since 2014, T-Mobile has been an industry leader in offering free inflight connectivity to its wireless customers. This partnership expands that reach and connects millions of Southwest passengers who fly with other wireless carriers, but want the same convenience.

Southwest recently tested free Wi-Fi across its fleet for Rapid Rewards® members. The trial received high satisfaction scores from participating passengers. Based on this feedback, the airline has been making significant investments to ensure its onboard internet is reliable, fast, and easy to use. Southwest and T-Mobile will release additional details about the rollout in the coming weeks.

Tony Roach, Executive Vice President, Chief Customer & Brand Officer at Southwest Airlines, said:

We are focused on making sure our Customers have a great experience from the time they book a flight to the time they reach their destination. We’re pleased to partner with T-Mobile to bring free Wi-Fi to all Rapid Rewards Members. This is part of our ongoing commitment to elevate the cabin experience, with free WiFi being just one of the many enhancements Customers will see in the months ahead.”

Mike Katz, President of Marketing, Strategy and Products at T-Mobile, added:

We’re teaming up with Southwest to make staying connected in the air easier for millions of travelers. We’re excited for Rapid Rewards Members to experience free in-flight WiFi from takeoff to landing – no strings, no surprises. It’s just one more way we’re helping make travel a little smoother.”

Anthony’s Take: It’s a big day for Wi-Fi announcements. This is a nice addition for Southwest flyers and one that could help ease the sting of all of the other recent changes.
