Silver Airways filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December. Since then it has struggled to maintain its schedule with many flights seeing significant delays. Additionally, it has feuded with airports like Anguilla’s Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport (AXA) over more than $103,000 in unpaid fees and ceased service there. Today, it’s being reported that Silver Airways has cancelled all flights this weekend at Orlando International Airport (MCO) and left passengers stranded.
The regional airline has been struggling for the past few years. In April 2023, I wrote about how Silver Airways had not paid its rent at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) since 2021. Silver Airways allegedly owed $957,750.17 after its $113,634 security deposit was deducted. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is Silver Airways biggest hub. The airline is owned by a private equity firm (Versa Capital Management), so its finances are not public. This was apparently not resolved and other debts weighed down the regional carrier further, which led to the bankruptcy filing.
When Silver Airways announced its bankruptcy plans a few months ago, it said:
- All tickets remain valid, and we will continue operating as usual
- You can book flights with Silver through our website or any other channel
- United and JetBlue customers, including loyalty program members, will experience no disruptions to their bookings or services
- Tickets purchased through any other airline or agency will be honored
Silver Airways has not released a statement around what is happening at Orlando International Airport (MCO), but the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) commented with the following:
MCO received notification yesterday afternoon that, effective immediately, all departing and arriving flights with Silver Airlines are canceled.”
One Mile at a Time shared that eight of Silver Airways’ aircraft appear to have been taken out of service. Lucky said:
Silver Airways has 14 ATR turboprops, including eight 42-600s and six ATR 72-600s. At this point, only four of the ATR 42-600s are flying, and two of the ATR 72-600s are flying, at least for passenger flights. Beyond that, a few planes just suddenly stopped flying on February 27, and a couple more planes have been ferried to Sioux Falls, South Dakota (FSD).”
Anthony’s Take: Silver Airways has been plagued with issues for quite some time. I have had great experiences and some really bad ones (flights excessively delayed to the point that I drove or cancelled) with the airline and hope they can get it together, but it’s not looking good.
