For the first time in its history, Delta Air Lines is putting route planning up for a vote. Through the airline’s first-ever Route Race, it’s inviting SkyMiles Members and Delta employees to choose which new Mediterranean destination will join its network in summer 2026.
Delta already flies to more than 300 destinations worldwide and this summer operated its largest-ever transatlantic schedule. This included the launch of nonstop service to Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (CTA) in Sicily.
How to Vote
From August 25th to 29th, SkyMiles Members can cast their votes in the Delta app. Simply log in with your SkyMiles credentials, navigate to the Explore and Trip pages, and select your preferred destination. Each vote helps decide which Delta Mediterranean route should be added to the map next summer. Results will be tallied after voting closes (the winning route will be announced within 30 days).
The Candidates: Three Mediterranean Getaways
- Ibiza, Spain: Famous for its nightlife, Ibiza is a global hub for music, DJs, and beach parties. It also offers hidden coves, tranquil beaches, and day trips to nearby Formentera. I’ve never been before, but it’s on my list.
- Sardinia, Italy: Rugged cliffs, hidden swimming coves, seaside villages, and delicious food define this island (along with mega-yachts and Russian billionaires in port). Sardinia is gorgeous and one of my husband’s favorite spots in Italy.
- Malta: Malta offers centuries-old fortresses, UNESCO-listed streets, and a party scene in its capital. I have not been in years, but enjoyed my time in the tiny island nation.
A Bold Step in Customer Engagement
With the launch of Route Race, Delta is pioneering a new level of customer engagement. While airlines typically expand based on network strategies and operational demand, Delta is asking its travelers and team members to co-create its map. This will hopefully ensure the next addition reflects what matters most to them. I would not be surprised to see more than one route launch and for United to quickly add one or more of these routes as well.
Paul Baldoni, Senior Vice President of Network Planning at Delta Air Lines, said:
SkyMiles Members and Delta people are at the center of everything Delta does. The Route Race is a celebration of their influence, giving our community a voice in where they want to fly next and inviting them to help shape Delta’s global network. The destinations where Delta flies are more than just dots on a map – they’re gateways to culture, connection and possibility, and this is a chance for our Members and employees to bring one of them closer.”
Anthony’s Take: This is exciting. While United still dominates when it comes to the number and variety of international destinations served, Delta is making headway. All three are fun additions and sure to be popular with travelers. No US airline currently offers nonstop service to these three as well. What are you voting for in this Route Race?
