American Airlines has rolled out a new promotion offering up to 5,000 bonus Loyalty Points for eligible upcoming flights. This isn’t a huge amount, but it’s a god way to kickstart requalifying for elite status (American’s qualification year switched over a few days ago).
Loyalty Points are now the sole metric used to qualify for status in the American AAdvantage® program. Members can earn them through a variety of activities, including flying, shopping, hotel stays, rental cars, and credit card spending. From time to time, American introduces targeted promotions to accelerate earning like this one and I usually try to hop on them.

Members can find the offer by logging into their AAdvantage® accounts. From the main account page, navigate to the “Promotions” tab to check eligibility and register. This offer might be targeted, but it seems like most people are seeing it.
Members can earn bonus Loyalty Points per eligible flight segment:
- 500 bonus Loyalty Points for every eligible flight segment
- 1,000 bonus Loyalty Points for flight segments departing from or arriving at select airports in Mexico and the Caribbean
- An additional 1,000 bonus Loyalty Points for flight segments booked by business travelers participating in AAdvantage Business or traveling on Corporate/Accredited Representative Tickets
The maximum bonus available under the promotion is 5,000 Loyalty Points. Remember, to hit status you must earn the following:
- AAdvantage Gold® (40,000 Loyalty Points)
- AAdvantage Platinum® (75,000 Loyalty Points)
- AAdvantage Platinum Pro® (125,000 Loyalty Points)
- AAdvantage Executive Platinum® (200,000 Loyalty Points)

Anthony’s Take: I wish flights that I had already booked counted, but I registered and will look to earn additional Loyalty Points. Even if you don’t have firm plans, it’s always a good idea to register for promos in case you forget in the future.
