Back in March, I wrote about Christopher Stuart Crittenden, 54, of Frederick, MD. He punched a United Airlines gate agent at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and knocked the man unconscious. He faced assault and disorderly conduct charges as well as a ban from United Airlines for his actions as the flight was deplaning. Yesterday, he had his day in court.

The criminal affidavit filed in Eastern District of Virginia reads that Crittenden was scheduled to fly on a United Airlines flight from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) on March 13th. The flight was delayed, and caused Crittenden to unleash his anger on the poor gate agent who had apologized for the delay. Crittenden continued to berate the gate agent. The captain spoke to him and determined that he was not going to be able to fly. This caused his anger to build and he struck the gate agent with a punch to the jaw (which later required dental work) before attempting to strike the other agent. The US Attorney’s Office Eastern District of Virginia said that he was intoxicated at the time (Crittenden also confirmed that he had consumed several alcoholic beverages).

On July 10th, Crittenden pleaded guilty to a felony when he admitted to punching the agent and attempting to hit another at the gate. His sentencing is scheduled for October 9th and he could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for his careless and violent actions. Crittenden has already paid $15,000 in restitution as part of the plea agreement.

Anthony’s Take: As I said in March, regardless of what set this man off, he is completely in the wrong. The gate agent was simply doing his job and should not face violence. Hopefully, justice gets served here and this man ends up with a severe punishment. Some jail time might make him think twice.
