A 41-year-old passenger passed away on a Fiji Airways flight headed to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) on Saturday. The man suffered from an undisclosed medical condition about 90 minutes before the flight was set to reach the airport.
Fiji Airways flight FJ870 was en route from Nadi International Airport (NAN) in Fiji. The flight crew declared a medical emergency before safely landing at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). But, it was too late for the passenger who was declared deceased by medical personnel upon arrival.
In a statement, Fiji Airways said:
Despite the best efforts of our cabin crew and a doctor on board who provided immediate assistance, the passenger unfortunately passed away. Fiji Airways remains committed to the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew, and we are cooperating fully with the authorities as they manage this situation.”
Anthony’s Take: It’s sad that this man passed away in flight and my condolences go out to his family and friends. The chances of dying on a plane are one in 13.4 million, so it’s very rare but not impossible to pass away while in flight.

“…before safely landing at San Francisco International Airport (SFO)…”
Well why wouldn’t they land safely? It wasn’t a plane issue.
Valid point. More to convey that this was an isolated medical incident with one passenger and not something that was impacting the crew or others.
