New York-based artist, Ashley Longshore, took to Instagram to express her outrage with United Airlines after she claims that flight attendants threatened to have her removed from the flight if she took her dog from its carrier or gave it water while in flight.

In Longshore’s now deleted Instagram post, she wrote:

United, your flight attendant just made me shove and smash my dog under the seat and threatened me if I removed her or gave her water during a 3 hour flight! This is abusive!!!! I am so upset! I am sobbing!

This is abusive and cruel. To tell me i can not give her water!!!!!!! To call the captain and threaten to kick me off the plane because I am sobbing…… Does anyone know what I can do here????”

Longshore is a fairly well-known artist (I was not aware of her, but I’m not in the art scene). Her works fetch up to $10 million and Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek are among her clients. This incident occurred on July 1st while she was flying from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY). She was scolded by flight staff for removing her Brussels Griffon from its carrier to give it a drink, which is against United’s pet policy.

A United spokesperson released the following statement:

Our crew reminded the customer of our pet in cabin policy, which requires the carrier to remain closed.”

Maybe Longshore should have just done what tons of others do everyday and claim that the dog is a service animal. Then it would have free rein of the cabin without any repercussions.

Anthony’s Take: It sounds like Longshore encountered an overzealous flight attendant. Most I have seen don’t pay much attention to service animals or pets in the cabin.

If she had to shove and smush her dog under the seat maybe it’s too big to be a carryon pet? They have to fit under the seat.

I fly pets for a living…you sign a piece of paper at the counter that says you will follow the rules. She broke the rules when she took the dog out of the carrier. A 3 hour flight, the dog doesn’t need water. She needed to leave it alone and let it sleep. You give water before you get on the flight, if it’s needed. She could have discreetly gien a drink if it was absolutely needed without taking it out of the carrier.

Another “celebrity” demanding exemption from the rules. Was this her first flight with dog? Can she read? Next trip she should book on primadona air.
