A female passenger was arrested at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) earlier this week after she allegedly attempted to transport 59 pounds of marijuana to Frankfurt Airport (FRA). The drugs were valued at $240,000, but could sell in Europe for almost triple that amount.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers made the discovery while inspecting passenger bags being loaded onto the Frankfurt-bound flight. Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) Police officers arrested Aleshia Anne Pinheiro, 42 years old of Las Vegas, and charged her with transporting a controlled substance and possession with intent to distribute (both felony are charges).

Baggage tags with her name on them helped officers identify Pinheiro at her gate, detain her, and bring her to a CBP inspection station to go through her two checked bags. Officers found 50 vacuum-sealed packages inside the two suitcases. The contents tested positive for marijuana. Customs officers are seeing an increase in passengers attempting to transport narcotics out of the country.

Even though some states have decriminalized marijuana for medicinal or recreational use, possession and use remains illegal under federal law. Federal law also prohibits transporting marijuana across state lines and exporting it from the United States.

Christine Waugh, Area Port Director for CBP’s Area Port of Washington, DC, said:

Anyone considering making a quick buck by carrying bulk marijuana loads for drug trafficking organizations should realize that the consequences you face can be severe when Customs and Border Protection officers catch you. CBP will continue to seize these marijuana loads to deprive transnational criminal organizations of illicit revenue, and we will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to hold drug mules accountable.”

Anthony’s Take: Trying to smuggle controlled substances is not a good idea. If busted, there goes your life and liberty. At least she wasn’t in Singapore like the women I wrote about yesterday.

I guess she never understood the premise of moderation, preferring go big or go home. Or go to jail.
