A 31-year-old passenger identified only as “Mario” reportedly attacked a flight attendant and attempted to gain access to the flight deck of Volaris flight Y4 3041 between León/Bajio International Airport (BJX) and Tijuana International Airport (TIJ). The man wanted to steer the plane towards the United States, but failed in his attempt yesterday morning.
Mario attempted to force his way into the cockpit of the Airbus A320. Flight attendants intervened and the man, who is a Mexican national, was overpowered and restrained as the aircraft made an emergency landing at Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla Guadalajara International Airport (GDL). Oddly, the man was traveling with his wife and two children when he allegedly attempted to hijack the aircraft.
Volaris released a statement that reads:
Volaris reports that this morning on Flight 3041, which was flying from El Bajio to Tijuana, a passenger attempted to use force to divert the planes towards the United States. The crew acted in accordance with established security procedures and, as per protocol, the plane was diverted to Guadalajara Airport. All passengers, crew and aircraft are safe.”
The New York Post reports that the plane continued on to Tijuana International Airport (TIJ) around two hours after the forced diversion. Airline personnel said that the suspect received word that one of his family members had been kidnapped. He also reportedly received death threats telling him not to travel to Tijuana after the flight had already taken off.
