A few weeks ago, I wrote about what I’ve deemed “2024’s dumbest travel trend.” Raw-dogging on a flight means that you eschew in-flight entertainment, food, drinks, and even sleep while flying. Instead, passengers choose to stare at the in-flight map or at nothing at all for the duration of their flights. I found it stupid to just sit and not take advantage of any amenities provided, but a nutritionist recently warned that this trend might also be bad for your health.

Nutritionist Toby King recently shared with Inspire Ambitions the potentially negative consequences of raw-dogging flights. This action could lead to constipation, fatigue, dehydration, and blood clots while flying. Toby said,

The trend requires you to sit still for hours at a time and not take in any food or liquids. This is a recipe for disaster, that could have terrifying consequences.

Plane cabins have low humidity levels to start with and can cause you to become dehydrated throughout your journey. If you aren’t drinking any water when flying you are adding fuel to the fire.

Keeping hydrated can help your skin and mucous membrane cells to keep bacteria from entering your body, and makes you more susceptible to infection, especially when you are surrounded by hundreds of others in a confined area. Getting sick at the beginning of your holiday isn’t a great way to start it.”

The scariest part of this is that you’re increasing your risk of blood clots. While the chances are slim, getting a blood clot could be disastrous while traveling if it breaks off and causes a blockage of the arteries in the lung.

Anthony’s Take: Flights are made for working, relaxing, and enjoying the journey. This is especially true in premium cabins. Why deprive yourself of food, drinks, and entertainment for some silly trend?

I disagree. If someone wants to sit silently and not recline onto my knees or play loud music or have a loud conversation on their phone, I’m really good with that.
