Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) opened a brand new Terminal A in January 2023. The modern space is gorgeous and packed with eateries, shops, lounges, tons of natural light, and more. Terminal B is home to most of Newark’s international flights (with the exception of United Airlines) and is in need of major changes and it sounds like it is about to get a replacement terminal.

Terminal B was constructed in the 1970s and it shows. The design is dated. The gates are broken into piers with their own separate security checkpoints and without the ability to travel between them airside. The EWR Vision Plan (the project that is driving this revitalization of the 96-year-old airport) calls for a new international terminal. It also includes upgrades to Terminal C, but United (who occupies the entire terminal) has already made many changes and invested quite a bit there. No other details were provided around what to expect with Terminal B, but if it’s anything like Terminal A it will be an incredible improvement.

In addition to these changes in the terminals, the EWR Vision Plan also calls for the construction of a “more efficient and resilient taxiway network” that can support larger aircraft as well as increase parking capacity and flexibility. Additional deicing pads will be added along with the revamped taxiways to make operations more efficient and faster. A new AirTrain and a full reworking of the roadways leading to and around the airport will round out this ambitious project.

Anthony’s Take: Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) was my home airport for many years. It was never my favorite, but the new Terminal A is a treat and I look forward to seeing these other changes made.
