Yesterday, I wrote about how oneworld® gained its 15th airline member with the addition of Oman Air. The CEO of the airline alliance shared some insights into what’s coming next for the smallest of the three major airline alliances including more shared lounges, but no planned airline additions.
Upgraded Points first reported that Nat Pieper, the CEO of oneworld®, recently shared some updates during a media roundtable focused on Oman Air’s joining. Interestingly, he shared that lounges are on the mind of the alliance. In the past two years, oneworld® opened two airport lounges in places where none of its members operates a hub. These included: Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) and Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN). According to Pieper, oneworld® wants to open more to reach a total of 10 in the next five years. That’s an ambitious plan, but the two that are currently open have been very popular. The next location could be revealed within the next six to 12 months.
oneworld® currently includes the following airlines:
- Alaska Airlines
- American Airlines
- British Airways
- Cathay Pacific
- Fiji Airways
- Finnair
- Iberia
- Japan Airlines
- Malaysia Airlines
- Oman Air
- Qantas
- Qatar Airways
- Royal Air Maroc
- Royal Jordanian
- SriLankan Airlines
When it comes to member airlines, Pieper said that the list is not going to change anytime soon. Hawaiian Airlines is expected to become the 16th alliance member in 2026 when it finishes merging with Alaska Airlines. Other than that, the alliance now covers 95% of the planet. An Indian or Chinese airline would add coverage in areas that are a bit anemic, but there are no current plans.
Anthony’s Take: oneworld® offers some of the world’s best lounges and the most generous access policies. The alliance is the smallest of the three, but has some great airlines. I’m curious to see what lounge comes next.
