It’s Christmas Eve and just one day until Santa returns. While waiting for the jolly elf, watching holiday movies (especially those that have scenes involving airports) is a great way to pass some time and get into a festive mood. Here are some of my favorites.
Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in. New York
Both movies show the McCallister family rushing through Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) as the family rushes to catch American Airlines flights to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) and Florida. It’s not disclosed as to where they’re headed, but I’d bet Miami International Airport (MIA). I liked seeing American operate Boeing 767 aircraft on domestic routes to New York and Florida in the sequel. Both movies are fun to watch and rewatch during the holidays.
Unaccompanied Minors
This holiday film focuses on a group of kids stranded at an unnamed Midwest airport on Christmas Eve. After a massive snowstorm grounds all flights, five young travelers team up to outsmart the airport staff. They navigate baggage tunnels, lounges, and closed-off terminals during their time in the airport.
Love Actually
The film begins and ends with real footage of people greeting loved ones at the arrivals area of London Heathrow Airport (LHR). The airport comes up several other times in the film. Without giving away the plot, the airport in Love Actually is used as a universal backdrop for love, loss, reunion, and joy.
Die Hard 2
This action movie has Bruce Willis caught up in another terrorist plot. This time it takes place at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) where he is waiting for his wife to arrive.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
This moving takes place during Thanksgiving, but it’s too good not to mention. The film starts at St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL) as Steve Martin tries to get home to Chicago and his family. He meets John Candy and the two have to team up to try to get back.
Anthony’s Take: Any of these movies are a good choice for the holidays. Did I miss any that should be on the list? Merry Christmas!
