When I fly, I am the type that says “hello” to his seatmate and then works on a laptop the rest of the flight. Sometimes I have Apple AirPods in and other times I do not, but I do not generally converse with the people around me. I’m not overly chatty and always hope that whoever sits next to me is not looking to talk the entire flight either. That changed on a flight today.
I’ll fly on around 200 planes this year and this is the first one (in I don’t even know how long) where I spent the entire time talking. It was a blast. Seated next to me on the Delta 757-200 headed for Tampa International Airport (TPA) from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) was Captain Rob. He flies Airbus A319, A320, and A321 aircraft. We talked about everything related to US carriers including the food, service, lounges, aircraft, and more. The flight flew by and in the end, he also gave me one of Delta’s Centennial Cheer cards.
I wrote about Delta ending its 100th year by introducing Centennial Cheer last week. The program aims to recognize 100,000 acts of kindness shared between customers and employees. Rather than centering the season on stress and crowds, Delta is placing attention on the gestures of patience, generosity, and humanity that make travel better. The cards grant the recipient a choice of four Delta gifts. These include:

Ornament

Tumbler

Packing Cube Set

Power Bank
I chose the power bank, but more importantly I chose to geek out with a fellow AV nerd. While I appreciated the card, the conversation meant so much more. It felt like we had known each other for years and before I knew it we were landing.
Anthony’s Take: Thanks for the card, Captain Rob. But, more importantly thank you for being what I love about Delta. The people make a huge difference at the airline. Enjoy your time in St. Pete.

“[I] always hope that whoever sits next to me is not looking to talk the entire flight”
Yet the first thing you do is talk to that person.
