The extreme winter weather is just about to bear down on the United States at full force. Airlines are doing what they can to maintain some sense of travel normalcy, but many flights are already being delayed and cancelled. In total, more than 10,000 flights have been cancelled today and tomorrow with an additional 12,500 delayed across the US.
The massive winter storm that’s poised to sweep across much of the United States has meteorologists warning of potentially historic conditions. The system is expected to bring heavy snow, sleet, ice, and dangerous wind chills to dozens of major and mid-sized cities across the East Coast, South, and Midwest. This includes severe predictions for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), and many more.

American Airlines seems to be faring the worst in the number of cancellations so far. But, all airlines are trying to get ahead of the storm and get aircraft out of potentially impacted areas. Today and tomorrow’s cancellations by airline (ranked):
- American Airlines (2,077 cancellations so far)
- Southwest Airlines (1,243 cancellations so far)
- Delta Air Lines (1,059 cancellations so far)
- United Airlines (627 cancellations so far)
- JetBlue Airways (286 cancellations so far)
The rest of the cancellations are coming from regional carriers who operate smaller aircraft including SkyWest, Envoy Air, PSA Airlines, Republic, Piedmont, and more.
Anthony’s Take: The massive winter storms are expected to impact around 200 million people across dozens of states and it’s wreaking havoc on air travel with flight delays and cancellations impacting airports across the country.
