A Houthi missile struck near the Terminal 3 access road at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV) this morning. The missile was launched from Yemen by the Iran-backed Houthis and somehow evaded Israel’s air defense system. As many as eight people were reported injured during the attack.

This incident caused the airport to ground flights, halt train service, and close the airport’s access roads. The videos above show drivers pulled over as the missile lands and creates a plume of black smoke near the airport. The Israeli Defense Forces released the following statement:

Following the sirens that sounded in a number of areas in Israel, several attempts were made to intercept the missile launched from Yemen. A fall was identified in the area of Ben Gurion Airport. The incident is under review.”

This week saw the announcement of Virgin Atlantic pull its service from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) and both Turkish Airlines and low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines return their slots and cancel service from Istanbul Airport (IST). Other airlines are suspending service temporarily again as they work to figure out the safety of flying there. A cease fire called in March does not appear to be going well and I have to wonder if airlines will once again cease flying there as they have over the past few years.

Air Europa, Air France, Air India, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Delta Air Lines, ITA Airways, KLM, Lufthansa, SWISS, United Airlines, and Wizz Air have all canceled flights with varying timeframes planned (KLM for example has cancelled flights through May 30th). The BBC reports that the airport has reopened for flights after they were halted immediately following the attack.

Anthony’s Take: It’s scary to hear it strike and see the black smoke. I wish all injured a speedy recovery and am glad that this was not worse.
