Lufthansa City Airlines has officially opened a new operating base at Frankfurt Airport (FRA). Flight operations from the Lufthansa Group’s largest hub began on February 9th. This follows the carrier’s successful launch in Munich in summer 2024. The move also strengthens Lufthansa City Airlines’ presence in Germany and lays the groundwork for continued growth in European short-haul travel.

The first flight from the new Frankfurt Airport (FRA) base departed for Manchester Airport (MAN) this week. The initial Frankfurt schedule includes flights to:

  • Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER)
  • Düsseldorf Airport (DUS)
  • Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP)
  • Manchester Airport (MAN)
  • Valencia Airport (VLC)

Berlin and Valencia will join the network in February, followed by Düsseldorf and Málaga in March as the airline introduces a second aircraft at the base.

Lufthansa City Airlines plans to steadily expand its Frankfurt route map beginning in summer 2026, with additional European destinations expected to include:

  • Bilbao Airport (BIO)
  • Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP)
  • Hamburg Airport (HAM)
  • Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL)
  • Ibiza Airport (IBZ)
  • London Heathrow Airport (LHR)
  • Marseille Provence Airport (MRS)
  • Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN)

The expanded network will enhance connectivity through Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and strengthen the Lufthansa Group’s short-haul feeder operations across Europe.

By September 2026, Lufthansa City Airlines’ Frankfurt-based fleet is expected to grow to seven Airbus A320neo aircraft. The airline already operates 13 aircraft from its home hub in Munich. In 2025, Lufthansa City Airlines operated nearly 16,000 flights, carrying around two million passengers to 27 destinations. Since September 2025, Lufthansa City Airlines has been a member of Star Alliance. This provides passengers with access to a worldwide network and expanded loyalty and travel benefits.

Alongside fleet expansion, Lufthansa City Airlines is continuing to recruit cockpit and cabin crew to support its growing operations.

Around 60 employees have already been hired in Frankfurt, and the airline expects to add:

  • 80 additional cockpit crew members
  • 200 cabin crew members

The airline currently employs approximately 450 people and views staffing growth as a central pillar of its expansion strategy.

Anthony’s Take: With the opening of its Frankfurt base and the continued rollout of new destinations, Lufthansa City Airlines is positioning itself as an increasingly important component of the Lufthansa Group’s European short-haul operations.
