Hoboken was my home for many years with Newark Liberty International (EWR) as my nearest airport and most frequent departure point (going back to the Continental days). The airport offers four United Clubs℠ (near gates A27, C74, C93, and C123). The location near Gate C74 was recently remodeled and it is a huge improvement over the old space. The design, food and beverages, and seating all make it a great place to work and relax before a flight.
Access
An escalator, elevator, or stairs provides access to the lounge. It’s located one level above the gates. The escalators are a welcome addition (they were added when the lounge reopened in October 2023) as the elevator is slow and the stairs with bags is a hike. Access is granted for those with United Club℠ memberships, day passes from Chase co-branded credit cards or purchased for $59 (although there was a sign saying they were not being accepted while I was there), Global Services® members, United passengers with Gold or higher status traveling internationally, international Business or First Class passengers traveling on a Star Alliance flight, and Star Alliance Gold members regardless of class flown. You can find more information about these lounges and their access rules here.
I love that this lounge uses automated gates for entry, but they have had some issues every time I have been here.
Agents are nearby for guests that need assistance.
Anthony’s Take: When flying United domestically, I always make a point to stop by the United Clubs℠ to get some work done, relax, and have a snack or drink. I find it hard to believe that the lounge near gate C74 is the same space that once held a dated Continental Presidents Club that became a United Club℠ with minimal changes. The new space is packed with a good food selection, bar, tons of seating, and modern restrooms. It can get extremely crowded during peak times, but this lounge is fairly large at 18,000 square feet with the capacity to accommodate 400 guests.
Bar
A long bar makes up an entire wall of the lounge. It’s a big space with lots of seats. There is a variety of paid and complimentary beer, wine, and spirits here. The free offerings are pretty basic, but the paid selections are not badly priced.
Flavored water is available as soon as you enter the lounge along with some fresh fruit.
One of two beverage stations is located near the buffet.
More flavored water is found here.
There is also a Coca-Cola Freestyle machine.
Filtered water is also on offer.
A coffee machine, drip coffee, tea, and condiments are also found here.
A second beverage station is on the other side of the lounge.
Another coffee machine, drip coffee, and condiments were here.
More fresh fruit was found here and in many other places throughout the lounge.
Food
The food in the United Clubs℠ has improved in the past few years and is even better than it was pre-Covid. There are multiple areas with snacks and drinks as well as several buffets for cold and hot food. The food choices include everything from sandwiches to soups to salads and a few hot entrees, plus cookies and other desserts.
Chicken Mushroom Marsala
Vegetable Paella
Roasted Lemon Potatoes
Zucchini, Red Peppers, and Yellow Squash
Chicken Noodle Soup and Italian-Style Tomato Bisque
Chicken Salad Sandwich
Portabello Sandwich
Mediterranean Couscous Salad
Cilantro Chicken and Green Leaf Salad
Condiments
Cheese
Grapes
Rice Pudding
Lemon Bars
Brownies
Chocolate Chip Cookies
Even more fresh fruit
Seating & Decor
As mentioned, this is a big lounge with lots of seats. It was really quiet when I visited with plenty of open tables, couches, chairs, and more.
Decor is modern and minimal.
The lounge is shaped like a square with seating lining all of the walls.
My biggest complaint was around the number of people sleeping and barefoot throughout the lounge. There were at least four or five like this with staff doing nothing. It’s gross and does not belong in a public space.
Amenities
This United Club℠ offers free Wi-Fi, restrooms, departure boards, a customer service desk, and the food and beverages mentioned above. I’m hopeful that United continues to make other lounges as nice as this one.
The customer service desk was not staffed while I was there.
Overall Impression:
The United Club℠ near gate C74 is nicely designed and much improved from its old look. It offers a nice buffet and plenty of space to work and relax.
