TikTok user @cheapholidayexpert has garnered over 1.8 million views for her video where she demos wearing a fishing vest in order to pack her belongings on her person versus paying for a carry-on bag. Both The Wall Street Journal and The New York Post reported on this silly trend.
@cheapholidayexpert Packing hack #3 – A FISHING VEST 🎣 After stuffing my pants in a neck pillow and using a duty free bag, it was only time before I reached the heady heights of leisurewear 🦺 Not only is it super stylish (😬) but it has about twelve million pockets for stuffing your bits in. Honestly – this one is daft but also… COMPLETELY LEGIT???!! It’s a winner for me 😂 WOULD YOU GIVE THIS A GO? And let me know if there’s any hacks you want me to test out for you – I AM WILLING TO GIVE ANYTHING A GO 💪 Just call it invinvestigativejournalism♀️ 💾 Don’t forget to save this hack or tag someone you think will like this!! ttravelhacktravelhacks pacpackinghackecheaptraveldbudgettravelseasyjetaryanairzzair
In the video, she manages to cram a portable speaker, deodorant, AirPods, a battery pack, a deck of cards, a bikini and more into the vest. She even fits her laptop into a pocket on the back of the vest.
@dance.likenooneswatching Will this packing hack work? Extra bag fees?💰🚫 No thanks! 🧳 #travelhacks #airplanetiktok #airplanehack #traveltips #savemoney #fishingvest #airportoutfit #airportfit #losangeles #lax #spiritairlines #frugal #travel #packing #flight #packinghacks This fishing vest is a great packing hack! Don’t pay extra baggage fees for your flight. This fishing vest held a week’s worth of clothes. I got it from Dick’s Sporting Goods. 🙌🏼😂 Go get your’s! Follow me for more great life hacks! 🥰🤣
Other videos in her “Packing Hack” series show her stuffing a bra, filling a neck pillow with clothing, and more. The trend is spreading as user @dance.likenooneswatching packed clothing for a week into her fishing vest.
There are better ways to travel, but I guess these could work if you’re on a low-cost carrier and looking to keep your spend as low as possible.
Anthony’s Take: I sometimes wonder why people go through the motions to save a few bucks when it makes them uncomfortable or look ridiculous. I’d rather save a little more money and travel with at least a carry-on bag and not all of my belongings on me while flying.

Does Tik Tok create morons or have they just been hidden this long? It brings back the old saying: “Just because you “can” doesn’t mean you “should””.
