Korean Air flight KE658 from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) to Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN) had a passenger attempt to open the emergency exit while the aircraft was in flight. While it’s not possible to open an emergency exit at cruising altitude, flight attendants sprung into action to get the man away from the door.

Video above shows multiple flight attendants pull the man away from the door and restrain him. The flight was able to continue to its destination and authorities met the aircraft upon arrival.

A spokesperson for Korean Air said:

If illegal activities that hinder safety occur during the operation of the aircraft, we will take strong measures.”

No word has been released around whether the man had been drinking or under the influence of anything else. The man reportedly sat in a jumpseat near the exit. These are only to be occupied by crew. When they informed him that he could not sit there and that he should return to his seat, he refused. He then attempted to open the exit as shown above.

It’s hard to believe, but this happens more often than you might guess with too many incidents to list them completely. In August, a New Jersey man freaked out on American Airlines flight AA2102 between Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). After vaping, refusing to stay seated, and locking himself in the lavatory, he propositioned a flight attendant for sex and attempted to open emergency exits in both the front and rear of the aircraft. In July 2023, I wrote about a 44-year-old passenger who was onboard Sun Country Airlines flight SY346 from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP). As the Boeing 737-800 approached the gate, he popped open the emergency exit, hopped out onto the wing, and ran from the plane.

Anthony’s Take: Thankfully, this plane landed without any further incident. Substances and/or mental health issues are usually at play when these scenarios occur. Hopefully, this man gets the help he needs.
