Korean Air flight KE189 had only been in flight from Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN) for about an hour when it was forced to divert and head back to its origin after the cabin pressure system malfunctioned on the Boeing 737 MAX 8. The aircraft was forced to descend quickly and multiple passengers experienced nosebleeds, and ear pain as a result.
Yesterday, the aircraft was bound for Taichung International Airport (RMQ) when the issue arose about an hour after takeoff. The malfunction caused the pilots to make the aircraft quickly descend from 30,000 to 9,000 feet according to Dim Sum Daily. This rapid drop caused 15 passengers to complain of ear pain and labored breathing with 13 of them requiring medical attention. The descent was described by one passenger as five times the gravity of a roller coaster ride (the oxygen masks also deployed).
Korean Air issued an apology to the 125 passengers on board and reported that there were no serious injuries. Passengers were rebooked on a flight to Taichung today.
Anthony’s Take: This must have been scary to experience, but luckily there were no serious injuries and the passengers made it to their destination today.
