KLM has become one of the first European carriers to introduce free inflight internet on short-haul routes. Beginning today, January 22nd, passengers can start to access free Wi-Fi for the duration of their flights.

The rollout of complimentary Wi-Fi is happening gradually across the airline’s European fleet. Half of KLM’s short-haul aircraft will offer free connectivity as of this week (with service expanding over the next several years as more aircraft are upgraded or delivered factory-equipped with modern systems). The complimentary internet will be available on all Airbus A321neo and Embraer 195-E2 jets (as well as a some of the airline’s Boeing 737-800 fleet).

The move is especially impactful for KLM as its intra-European aircraft do not include seatback entertainment screens. The airline sees free Wi-Fi as a way to enhance comfort, productivity, and entertainment without installing traditional hardware. Passengers can access unlimited browsing once logged in or registered with the Flying Blue loyalty program.

The Wi-Fi push comes alongside KLM’s introduction of 12 new A321neo aircraft since August of last year. These new planes feature redesigned cabins, refreshed seats, and full connectivity. This reflects a broader strategy to modernize the European travel experience for customers.

Stephanie Putzeist Vice President of Customer Experience at KLM, said:

We listen carefully to what our passengers value and free internet has been on their wish list for some time. Through this step, we are making travel within Europe more personal and comfortable: everyone can plan their flight in their own way and stay connected. We are delighted to realize this now for our passengers.”

Anthony’s Take: With onboard connectivity increasingly viewed as an essential amenity,  KLM’s free Wi-Fi strategy positions the carrier ahead of many competitors and adds new value for travelers.
