JetBlue announced today that it’s adding a new international award partner. TrueBlue members can now use points to book qualifying Japan Airlines-operated flights on jetblue.com. Japan Airlines is the fifth redemption partner that JetBlue has added in the past year with flights now available on Hawaiian Airlines, Icelandair (more here), Qatar Airways, and TAP Air Portugal (more here).

Japan Airlines is JetBlue’s first East Asian partner and award seats are now possible to cities across Japan and East Asia. While Japan Airlines is not known for releasing a lot of award seats to/from the United States, it is possible to find some in Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class. First Class awards are not an option. Pricing does not look terrible with some redemptions between the United States and Japan costing 64,000 points in Business Class. There are also no surcharges added to these tickets.

JAL Mileage Bank members will also be able to redeem miles for select flights across JetBlue’s network, including those to Latin America, the Caribbean, Canada, and cities along the US East Coast.

Edward Pouthier, Vice President of Loyalty and Personalization at JetBlue, said:

We’re excited to expand the TrueBlue experience by growing our network of trusted airline partners, giving our members even more ways to redeem points. With Japan Airlines redemption options, we’re opening the door to more destinations for our customers to travel where they want, how they want.”

Yasushi Omori, Executive Officer, Senior Vice President of Mileage and Lifestyle Business at Japan Airlines, added:

We’re delighted to announce our newest mileage partnership with JetBlue, a leading carrier based in New York. This partnership will enable JAL to enhance its network beyond New York and Boston, where direct flights from Japan are available.”

While JetBlue is not part of the three major airline alliances, it now has several international partners. JetBlue points are fairly easy to get as it’s a transfer partner with American Express, Capital One, Chase, and Citi.

Anthony’s Take: This is exciting news for JetBlue flyers (and maybe a little less so for JAL MileageBank members). I’m going to be searching for award seats to Japan to use up some banked points.
