Basic Economy is the cheapest way to fly, but with these fares come many restrictions without the ability to change flights, cancel, earn full mileage credit, choose seats, check bags for free, or even bring on a carry-on bag. JetBlue is looking to change this last point and the airline will be adding a free carry-on bag to its Blue Basic fares as of September 6th.

This change makes JetBlue’s basic economy fares one of the industry’s most appealing for price-conscious passengers. In addition to the new carry-on bag allowance, all fares, including Blue Basic, will continue to receive complimentary seatback entertainment and fast, free, unlimited Wi-Fi on all flights.

In the event of space running out in the overhead bins, passengers may be required to check carry-on bags at the gate for no additional charge. All bags will remain subject to size and weight limitations found here.  JetBlue’s President, Marty St. George, commented:

Carry-on bags are an important part of travel to customers, and when presented with a choice between JetBlue’s award-winning service and another carrier’s basic offering, we want JetBlue to be the easy winner. We’re always looking for ways to evolve our offering in response to customer preferences. This is a win-win as we improve the customer experience and keep JetBlue competitive in our industry.

As flying becomes cheaper and more accessible for a spectrum of customers, a one-size-fits-all offering no longer works. Whether a customer prefers more included benefits, or they shop solely on price, our fare options coupled with our great onboard service, makes JetBlue the best choice. No matter what fare a customer prefers, we provide clear and transparent information on what that selection includes.”

Anthony’s Take: American, Delta, and United have made Basic Economy fares rather punitive. It’s good to see JetBlue bucking this trend. The airline needs some good news to attract customers after the rough year it has had on many fronts.
