JetBlue has announced a groundbreaking move to improve operational efficiency and reduce its environmental footprint by becoming the first airline in the United States to integrate SkyBreathe® MyFuelCoach (an advanced fuel efficiency application from OpenAirlines). The innovative platform empowers pilots with real-time insights to optimize fuel usage, cut emissions, and boost performance across JetBlue’s flights.

SkyBreathe® MyFuelCoach leverages machine learning and historical flight data to provide pilots with a detailed analysis of their past flights. Using these insights, the app delivers tailored suggestions to help flight crews refine future fuel consumption. The solution is part of the broader SkyBreathe® suite, already trusted by over 75 airlines worldwide, and represents a significant step forward in JetBlue’s JetForward strategy, which focuses on the airline’s financial and environmental future.

Beyond individual flight-level improvements, JetBlue’s fuel optimization team will deploy the SkyBreathe 360 dashboard to identify broader, system-wide trends that impact efficiency. By analyzing flight data across JetBlue’s network, the airline can find opportunities to refine:

  • Taxi procedures to reduce fuel burn during long ground delays.
  • Airport-specific operations to optimize schedules and minimize congestion.
  • Flight planning to lower excess fuel loads while maintaining safety.

JetBlue has already implemented single-engine taxiing, a procedure that saves an estimated 15,000 gallons of fuel per month. With the help of SkyBreathe®, the airline has identified an additional 73,000 gallons in potential monthly savings. This equates to over 700 tons of CO2e annually.

The introduction of MyFuelCoach is the latest step in JetBlue’s commitment to sustainable aviation. It joins a range of current and planned initiatives, including PACE Aerospace’s SmartRoutes app (which helps pilots select optimal flight paths for time and fuel savings), improved fuel planning accuracy, a younger and more fuel-efficient fleet (including Airbus A220s and A321neos), sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) adoption to lower lifecycle emissions, and electrification of ground operations and investments in low-carbon technologies.

With fuel accounting for one of the largest operating costs and environmental impacts in aviation, JetBlue’s embrace of SkyBreathe® MyFuelCoach positions the airline as a leader in data-driven sustainability. By combining technology, smart planning, and a strong environmental strategy, JetBlue aims to advance its goal of reducing total emissions and contributing to a more sustainable future for the airline industry.

Chris Lum, System Chief Pilot at JetBlue, said:

Over the course of more than 900 daily flights, small gains in efficiency can translate into major savings. With access to SkyBreathe MyFuelCoach on the flight deck, our pilots have access to real-time performance insights that help them refine their procedures and contribute to our JetForward strategy, strengthening our financial foundation through cost savings while also meaningfully addressing our emissions.”

Anthony’s Take: Airlines have been working hard to balance profits with environmental impact. It’s great to see JetBlue continue to invest in spite of the myriad issues the airline faces.
