A fire broke out in the hourly parking garage at Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) on Friday. It remains closed today as dozens of cars were destroyed and collapse of the second and third floors of the building. While the airport resumed normal operations, travelers are urged to stay out of the parking garage while its determined if it’s structurally sound.

Flights were grounded for around four hours on Friday as the blaze in the garage was brought under control. Airport officials continue to assess the damage and those parked there are told that they cannot retrieve their parked vehicles. No injuries have been reported, but around 600 parking spaces are closed indefinitely.

NBC First Coast News reports that Jacksonville Fire and Rescue thinks that the fire started around noon in a car on the second floor. The fire eventually spread to around 50 other vehicles and this caused a partial collapse of two floors. Cars parked in the unaffected portion of the garage will be able to begin retrieving their vehicles on Wednesday. Parking fees have been waived for those whose vehicles are stuck in the garage.

Anthony’s Take: Thankfully, no one was hurt. Cars can be replaced with insurance claims, but not lives. It’s crazy to see the pictures of how hot this blaze must have been.
