Lufthansa and ITA Airways announced last month that the Italian carrier officially exited the SkyTeam alliance on February 3rd. ITA Airways plans to join Star Alliance, but this will not occur until the first half of 2026. In addition to changing alliances, ITA Airways is doing lots to align with Lufthansa. This includes everything from mileage earning and redemptions, reciprocal lounge access, codeshare flights, and shifting its operations to co-locate with the other Lufthansa Group Airlines in Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Munich International Airport (MUC).
At Frankfurt Airport (FRA), the Italian airline moved from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1, which is used by the rest of the Lufthansa Group. ITA Airways will use gates in the A and B area in the future, which will provide passengers shorter distances to walk for connections. The Deutsche Bahn long-distance train station with ICE high-speed train connections is also easily accessible from Terminal 1.
Travelers transiting Munich International Airport (MUC) will find ITA Airways has moved from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 and its satellite. This terminal is operated by a joint venture between Lufthansa and Munich Airport.
At other Lufthansa Group airline hubs like Brussels Airport (BRU), Vienna Airport (VIE), and Zurich Airport (ZRH), the airlines are already co-located in the same terminals. The airlines have started many codeshares and ITA Airways passengers now have access to more than 100 codeshare connections throughout Europe.
Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer, Lufthansa Group, said:
This move is an important milestone in the integration of ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group. Our customers will be able to transfer faster and more comfortably thanks to shorter distances and will have more comfort throughout their entire journey. This also includes the shared use of lounges. This integration gives ITA Airways passengers access to the enormous advantages of the Lufthansa Group, with all its premium airlines and a worldwide route network. It also gives passengers more direct access to numerous destinations to the Italian market. In just two months, we have succeeded in offering our passengers a seamless premium travel experience.”
Starting yesterday, ITA Airways passengers can use around 130 lounges of the Lufthansa Group The lounges of ITA Airways are also now accessible to Lufthansa Group passengers. Miles & More members can earn and redeem miles on all flights operated by ITA Airways. Volare customers can also earn and redeem points with Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines.
Anthony’s Take: This integration is moving quickly and seems like it is aligning better with the Lufthansa Group (and hopefully Star Alliance next year) than it did with SkyTeam airlines.
