Aero Crew News posted (and than deleted the post) that Southwest Airlines was planning to acquire JetBlue Airways for $2.82 billion. Speculation has been running rampant lately that news was coming from Southwest and also JetBlue. We saw Southwest issue a press release that its cutting 15% of its corporate staff, but there was no mention of JetBlue.
The post was removed from all social channels without any further mention by Aero Crew News.

Aviation insider, @JonNYC, also posted on X a supposedly leaked Southwest memo that says that the acquisition will take place in Q2 2025. He believes it to be fake. The timeline alone makes me agree with him as the acquisition being wrapped in a few months seems overly ambitious if not impossible.
A Southwest and JetBlue merger are not the only rumors swirling recently. A few weeks ago, it was United who many believed might make a play for JetBlue. United denied it and even filed a Form 8-K saying that it was not attempting any purchase or merger of another carrier. While that might be true, it still leaves the door open for United to acquire assets like aircraft and slots at airports it wants such as New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK).
Southwest and JetBlue operate two very different business models, fleets, offerings, and there is just about nothing in common. JetBlue would bring a huge expansion in NYC, but I don’t see Southwest hopping into transatlantic service, Mint, and all of the other moves that the low-cost carrier has been making lately to reinvent itself.
Anthony’s Take: It’s all rumors at this point. We’ll need to wait for official announcements. I don’t see Southwest being a real announcement, but I would still like to see United absorb JetBlue.
