I am flying this morning from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) and came across what might be the dumbest, most convoluted way to use CLEAR+ at an airport to get through security. I have had CLEAR+ since the program started, but this is the first time that I have encountered its in-bred cousin, CLEAR Mobile.

What is CLEAR Mobile?

This genius idea was introduced last year. CLEAR describes it as “a new app-based Lane.” I walked up to the CLEAR lane and was asked if I had the app. I did not. I was asked to download it and presented with a QR code to scan. This did not work and the CLEAR agent said “oh, it’s spinning.” She then asked me to try again and again. It did not work.

How Does it Work?

It’s simply, stupid. You need to download the free CLEAR App and log in. You then need to show a QR code to the person checking you belong in the Clear lane. Then you need to take out your ID because that’s needed. Please tell me what the point of this is other than to be so cumbersome that you step out of line and into the empty TSA PreCheck® line? That’s exactly what I did.

SDF Tree

At least the Christmas tree at the airport was pretty.

Anthony’s Take: CLEAR Mobile does not verify your identity. It says so right on its website. What is the point? I got so annoyed this morning and really wish CLEAR would send me a survey to tell them just how dumb this idea is and to ask why it makes sense for any traveler. If this was the way that every airport was, CLEAR would have no customers.
