PLAY is a low-cost carrier based in Iceland. It began operations in 2021 and operates a fleet of Airbus A320neo aircraft with its hub at Keflavík International Airport (KEF). The airline has been flying to three US destinations, but these all appear to have end dates in September or October.
The three destinations are as follows:
- Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) (ends on October 24th)
- Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) (ends on September 15th)
- New York Stewart International Airport (SWF) (ends on September 1st)
PLAY departed Canada in April when it ceased flights to John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM). It looks like the United States is now getting the chop completely after adjusting schedules and destinations for the past few years.
With the US routes dropped, PLAY will focus on other leisure routes in Europe. The airline is being taken private by Olafsson and Elias Skuli Skulason, vice chairman of the board at PLAY. The airline will be reduced to only four aircraft that will be operated by a Maltese Air Operator Certificate (AOC). The other six planes that PLAY owns will be leased out to other airlines.
Anthony’s Take: PLAY is not the first Icelandic airline to try out and depart the United States. Icelandair needs some competition, but it seems like it’s the only airline that can consistently maintain its schedule between Iceland and the US.
